Real Good - LMS Course Builder
Product Design
This project involved designing the UX and UI for a feature in an LMS or Learning Management System that my client was developing. The LMS is a specialized CMS system involved around education and course building, having two kinds of users the end-user (instructors) and readers (students)
Instead of building out a true WYSIWYG system, the Course Builder needed to be more strict due to the nature of development complexity, but also since our end-users would not be designers and should not need to know or learn anything about design in order to create Courses with the builder. Having this limitation also allows us to control the consistency of courses built within the system.
Primarily a side panel, the builder is meant to be used alongside a preview of the output of the builder, not unlike your standard WYSIWYG but without the interactivity. Content is handled through a fixed set of “modules” which output a block of content. These modules allow for some flexibility at least within the module itself, including content and specific fixed configurations.
The module approach also allows for some future-proofing as more custom modules could be developed as needed or as the product matures.

About
Hello! I'm Tom. I've been a professional designer for just about 14 years now and have always felt an affinity for problem solving. I believe designing thoughtful solutions begins with a deep understanding of three things: the problem, the user or audience and desired outcome.
When I'm not working I enjoy moonlighting as a photographer, camping, playing video games and occasionally making noises on my guitar.
